The Carton-Pierre Casket Reproduction is a masterfully crafted, accurate reproduction produced in the USA using the same materials as the original. These caskets are custom produced for each order, and please allow 3-6 weeks for shipping.
This historic design dates to the mid-19th Century and was originally created in 1849 for Leuchars by Joseph L. Williams using carton-pierre material designed and manufactured by George Jackson & Sons. The neo-Gothic sarcophagi were made to house the revolutionary Staunton Chessmen, registered by Nathaniel Cooke and introduced by Jaques of London in September of 1849.
Available in two sizes: Standard Carton-Pierre Casket with exterior dimensions of 8" Wide (Base) x 5.5" x 4.5" Tall and interior dimensions of 6.5” Wide, 4.5” Front to Rear and 3.5” Deep; Large Carton-Pierre Casket with exterior dimensions of 8.75" Wide (Base) x 6.5" x 5.25" Tall and interior dimensions of 6.5” Wide, 4.5” Front to Rear and 4.5” Deep. The standard size accommodates Library, Tournament, or small club-size Size (4" King) 32 Piece Staunton chess sets. The large size accommodates Jaques Full Club Size 32 Piece Chess Sets. Please note that these caskets are exact reproductions of the original and were never designed to accommodate any of the larger full club size chess sets with four Queens.
