Alexei Shirov’s My Best Games In The Petroff Defense is a Chessbase DVD focused on the Russian Defence (Petroff Defence). It is designed to challenge the idea that this opening is drawish, dry, or boring.
Shirov begins with a game featuring the Cochrane Gambit, then moves into solid and recognised lines while explaining their deeper content. Along the way, he also shows how each phase of the game can teach practical lessons, including endgames. Video running time: over 5 hours.
Shirov, born in Riga like world champion Mihail Tal, became one of the world’s elite players at a very young age and is known for original, amazing ideas on the board. System requirements: Pentium-Processor at 300 Mhz or higher, 64 MB RAM, Windows 98 SE, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Media Player 9.0, DVD drive.
