Saint Petersburg 1895/96 is a revised chess book from Caissa Editions covering one of the strongest chess tournaments ever held. It tells the story of the event that followed the 1895 Hastings Tournament, when Harry Nelson Pillsbury emerged as a new star of the first magnitude.
The tournament invited the five highest players at Hastings: Pillsbury, Chigorin, Lasker, Tarrasch, and Steinitz. Tarrasch declined, and the others accepted, each with strong reason to fight for first place in Saint Petersburg 1895/96.
This revised edition is based on the 1989 version by John Owen. It uses Owen’s historical perspectives, the notes of Mason and Pollock from their 1896 book, and greatly revised notes by Robert Sherwood with engine analysis, plus colorful comments from British and German periodicals of the time. The title of the book is on the spine ONLY.
