The Arkhangelsk Variation of the Ruy Lopez - Volume 1 is a Syzgy chess opening title focused on Black’s departure from the main Ruy Lopez lines with 5...Ne4 in the Open Defense and 5...Be7 in the Closed Defense.
Its tournament history reaches back to the 1950's and may go even earlier, with a key test at the Gorki Team Championship in 1963 when players from the northeastern Russian seaport of Arkhangelsk introduced the idea to surprised opponents.
Black’s plan is direct: the kingside is deliberately developed later in order to build a masked battery along the a8-h1 diagonal through a Queenside Fianchetto.
