The Potter Memorial is a chess title centered on the international invitation tournament organized in memory of Reg Potter by the British Postal Chess Federation.
The idea was put forward in July 1970 by the Friends of Chess, who offered to sponsor the event with a prize fund of 100 euro. Reg Potter, the B.P.C.F. Secretary, accepted at once, but died only two months later, and the Federation chose to hold the tournament in his memory.
John Ward, the new Secretary, negotiated with the International Correspondence Chess Federation and permission was granted by the I.C.C.F. Congress held at Lugano in September 1971. The B.P.C.F. was authorized to stage an international invitation tournament known as the Potter Memorial Tournament, commencing in 1973 with up to fifteen players. The announced prizes were 30, 25, 20, 15, and 10 euro.
