Combat is a chess biography by Sidney Norman Bernstein, published by Ishi Press in 2009(2nd). It is a 156-page book focused on Bernstein’s games and career.
The book contains 142 annotated games against leading chess players of America, along with the story behind each game. Many of the games are tactically sharp and arise from unusual opening ideas, several invented by Bernstein himself.
Bernstein learned chess from his father at age 7, entered his first tournament at 15, and later played in major events including the U.S. Championship, the U.S. Open Championship, the World Open, and the Marshall and Manhattan Club Championships. He was a champion of both clubs and was awarded the Life Chess Master title by the U.S. Chess Federation.
