Shopworn - Essays In American Chess History is a collection of self-contained essays that explore a range of fascinating, puzzling, and enduring questions in the game.
The essays are grouped in four sections. Section One, Studies in Time, focuses mostly on tournaments and club play and includes both new and previously published pieces. The extended essays on the murder of Major Wilson (Chapter 1) and the Washington Chess Divan championship of 1942 (Chapter 4) are entirely new and were never before published.
These essays can be read individually or as a whole, offering glimpses into neglected byways of the past and reflecting a progression in the author’s thinking about chess, history, and their relationship.
