Spend less time memorizing opening lines and more time on the parts of chess that decide real games. Side-Stepping Mainline Theory is a chess book by New In Chess focused on practical study choices for club players.
Gerard Welling and Steve Giddins recommend the Old Indian-Hanham Philidor set-up as a basis for both Black and White. Their approach is designed to be learned quickly, require the bare minimum of maintenance and updating, and lead to rock-solid positions you will know how to handle.
The book’s aim is to help improving players move past excessive opening theory and focus on tactics, positional understanding, and endgame technique. Browse more in Accessories > Chess Books.
