The Basman-Williams Attack is a chess opening idea that arises after 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.h4. It was first played by the inventive English International Master Michael Basman in the 1970s and later adopted and developed by English Grandmaster Simon Williams.
Today, this fun attacking approach has also been used by several top grandmasters, including Chinese top grandmaster and former world number 2 Ding Liren in the recent Candidates tournament. It offers a practical way to sidestep Black’s main-line plans in the King’s Indian and Grünfeld Indian defenses.
