The Modern Spanish is a chess book from Russell Enterprises focused on the Breyer and Zaitsev Variations of the Ruy Lopez. Greek grandmaster Vassilios Kotronias examines both lines from White and Black’s point of view.
The book covers the strengths and weaknesses of these two highly dynamic variations and offers suggested improvements where necessary. It presents an objective look at two excellent opening choices for Black, with strategically complex and tactically rich play.
The Breyer Variation traces back to Hungarian hypermodern Gyula Breyer and his early-20th-century knight retreat 9...Nb8. The Zaitsev Variation was one of Anatoly Karpov’s workhorses in his title matches against Garry Kasparov and was formulated by theoretician Igor Zaitsev.
