This chess lecture explores Opening Trends 3 - The Catalan, with IM David Vigorito examining how tournament chess is changing and how new ideas are shaping opening play.
The Catalan combines ideas from the Queen’s Gambit and the Reti Opening, with White playing d4, c4, and g3 to fianchetto the bishop on g2. A common move order is 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g3. The lecture also looks at the opening’s name origin from Catalonia in Spain, plus its appearance in top-level chess, including Kramnik’s three games in the 2006 World Chess Championship and Anand’s four games against Topalov in 2010.
