Against 3.Nc3, Winawer’s 3...Bb4 is presented as Black’s strongest and most combative weapon, while the Chiburdanidze Variation, 4.Qd3, lets White step away from main line theory and steer the game into territory that is less familiar to Black. It was introduced into master play by then Women’s World Champion Maia Chiburdanidze in 1985 and later adopted by grandmasters such as Jonny Hector and Olexandr Bortnyk.
