Alexander Alekhine – The Russian Sphinx: Volume I (1892-1921) is the first book in Sergey Voronkov’s four-volume psychological biography of the former world chess champion.
This volume follows Alekhine’s early development through his departure from Soviet Russia in 1921, while also exploring his complex relationships with all five of his wives. It revisits key episodes including his internment in Germany during World War I, his escape from execution in Odessa, his service under the Bolsheviks as a detective, and his trip to the Urals as a Comintern translator.
Chess readers will find over 50 games and fragments with original commentary by Alekhine and his opponents, including eleven completely unknown Alekhine games and ten game scores from the first Soviet Championship in 1920 found in Alexander Kotov’s archive. The book is illustrated by over 170 photos and other visuals, many published for the first time.
