The French Defense is a semi-closed chess opening for Black after 1.e4 e6. The French Tarrasch variation begins with 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nd2, a flexible White setup named after Siegbert Tarrasch.
This variation became especially popular in the 1970s and 1980s, and was used to strong effect by Anatoly Karpov, including the famous 1974 Candidates final match against Viktor Korchnoi.
