The book follows Lipnitsky from his childhood in a poor Jewish family, through his time at the Kiev children’s chess club at the Pioneer Palace under Alexander Konstantinopolsky, to his World War Two service as an intelligence officer and his full-time chess career. It also covers his family life, his tragic early death at 35 from a terminal disease, and the wider hardships that touched his family during and after the war.
