First Grandmaster Of The Soviet Union presents the story of Boris Verlinsky (1888-1950), born in Bakhmut, Ukraine and raised in Odessa. He became the first holder of the grandmaster title in the Soviet Union and was one of the top Soviet players of the 1920s.
This biography covers his 1924 Soviet Championship master’s title, fourth prize at the 1925 Championship, victory over Bogoljubov, and his famous win against Capablanca at the 1925 Moscow International Tournament. It also includes his 1929 Soviet Championship title, his third-place finish in 1931, and his five Soviet Championship finals in total.
The book analyzes 130 games and fragments, with opponents including Capablanca, Alekhine, Botvinnik, Bronstein, Bogoljubov, and Spielmann. Many games are annotated by Verlinsky or his contemporaries and reviewed by grandmasters or international masters with modern engines for this work.
