Forgotten Genius is a hardcover book from Thinkers Publishing about Dragoljub Velimirovic, the former Yugoslav–Serbian chess grandmaster known for his inventive style and outspoken temperament.
Born in 1942 to a prominent family from Valjevo in the former Yugoslavia, Velimirovic was introduced to chess at age seven by his mother, Jovanka Velimirovic, one of Yugoslavia’s leading female chess players. He became a grandmaster in 1973 and was one of the last players to develop a system or strategy so inventive it bears his creator’s name.
The book also places his career in the context of the era, when the USSR was the dominant chess nation and the former Yugoslavia was able to challenge it strongly. During his prime, Velimirovic was never among the world’s top 20 players, and there were only about 200 grandmasters; today there are about 1,800.
