Man Ray Licensed Series Chess Pieces - 3.25'' King is a re-edition of Man Ray’s 1920 chess design, originally created from found objects in his studio.
The set uses Beech wood, as Man Ray originally intended, and is based on a set housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The design features geometric forms for the pieces, including a king as a pyramid, queen as a cone, rook as a cube, pawn as a sphere, and a knight fashioned from a box of abandoned violin necks.
Man Ray’s chessmen also reflect symbolic design: the King represents the Egyptian king's pyramid, the Queen the conical headdress of a medieval queen, and the Bishop a flask for concocting healing liqueurs. The Pawn is nearly as tall as the Rook, highlighting its hidden importance in the game.
