This volume focuses on piece play and unique chessboard situations, including the bishop pair, opposite-coloured bishops, centralization, and the often-overlooked question of when and whether to castle. Tiviakov also shows how the value of pieces can change depending on their exact placement, and how moving a single pawn from one square to another can alter the whole assessment of a position and the right strategy.
Later chapters cover how to play cramped and passive positions, how to play for a win with Black, and how to choose a strategy based on an opponent’s style and other psychological factors. The book is illustrated with examples from classic games and Tiviakov’s own games, and includes instructive exercises.
