Born in Tbilisi, Georgian SSR, Roman won the Junior Championship of the Soviet Union in 1962 and the University Championships in 1966 and 1968. He earned the IM title in 1970 and the GM title in 1977.
His record also includes winning the Lone Pine tournament in 1980, leading the 1984 U.S. Olympiad team, first place at The 53rd Hastings Chess Festival in 1977 / 1978, and U.S. Chess Championship victories in 1983 and 1989. He was also in the film Searching For Bobby Fischer, and his students include 3-time U.S. Chess Champion Gata Kamsky and GM Eugene Perelshteyn.
