The Austrian Coffeehouse Series Chess Pieces - 4.0" King from The House Of Staunton recreates the late Victorian Austrian Coffeehouse style, also known as Old Vienna or Viennese Coffeehouse chess sets.
These chessmen stand 4″ tall at the King, are pleasantly weighted, and feature broad bases for stability and strong board presence. The design was influenced by the Staunton pattern and is made to be durable with few, if any, weak areas. As with the original Viennese Coffeehouse sets, they are cushioned atop plush green English Baize base pads.
This style became standard fare across Central Europe, including the lands of the Austrian monarchy, Germany, Switzerland, and Northern Italy, and was used in major events such as Vienna 1898, Semmering 1927, and Karlsbad 1929.
