The California Chess Reporter - Volume 5 is an Ishi Press chess book covering a major stretch of California chess history from 1961-1964.
This volume opens with the 1961 US Open in San Francisco, won by Grandmaster Pal Benko with an 11-1 score over California State Champion Zoltan Kovacs in the final round. It also follows the rise of William Addison, the emergence of Duncan Suttles, Anthony Saidy’s move to Los Angeles, the 1963 Piatigorsky Cup tie between Paul Keres and Tigran Petrosian, and Bobby Fischer’s simultaneous exhibitions in 1964.
The book also reflects Kerry Lawless’s long-running effort to compile California chess history, including his ChessDryad.com work, the calgames.pgn database of 37,598 games, and the bound California Chess Reporter volumes used to make these reprints.
