Biedermeier chessmen were originally produced in Boxwood and Ebony beginning in the late 1830s. This style is known for its tall, slender profile, disc-like bases, and Bishops with a sloped headpiece and protruding staff. Like the historical sets that inspired them, these pieces reflect the simpler Central European coffeehouse tradition that remained popular until the late Victorian Period.
