The Circa 1961 Baku Wood Chess Pieces are a distinctive Soviet-inspired chess set from The House Of Staunton, featuring the 4.2" King variant and a design known for its bold board presence.
This set includes 34 chessmen, including four Queens, a standard introduced by The House of Staunton in 1993. The pieces reflect the Baku style’s recognizable bishops, knights, rooks, kings, and queens, with the exact reproduction based on the original set in Mr. Charles W. Grau’s collection.
The design blends modernist form with Ancient Rus influences, including simplified conical structures, double-collar royal connectors, curved rook walls, and the Novgorod Knight styling described in the source material.
