The Glass Eyed Lardy Series Chess Pieces feature a 3.75" King and reflect the classic Cavalier Chessmen by Lardy of France, sometimes sold under the Kismet name.
Each chessman is crafted from subtly figured Olivewood and Rosewood, is weighted, and sits on green felt base pads. The set includes the whimsical Knight with white ceramic eyes and black pupils, and the pieces were housed in a divided cardboard box. The original chessmen had a natural finish that responded well to an occasional light buffing with a cotton cloth; earlier versions were lacquered, while later chessmen used a penetrating oil finish.
Lardy was founded in 1890 in Dortan near Oyonnax in the French Jura and closed in 1992. These sets were produced after WWII, probably around 1970, and were exported in large numbers to the USA and England.
