The Life Of Philidor is a classic chess history book about François-André Danican Philidor (1726-1795), a remarkable figure known for both his music and his achievements in chess.
First published in 1863, the book follows Philidor from his youth through the French Revolution, covering his travels, his music, and his chess career. It also discusses his book Analyse du Jeu des Échecs (Analysis of the Game of Chess), which was translated into several languages and updated in several expanded editions.
In the second part, Tassilo von Heydebrand und der Lasa, co-author of Bilguer’s Handbuch and a strong player in his own right, takes a critical look at Philidor as both a chess author and chess player.
