A Distinguished Reproduction of the Iconic Grand Cigar Divan Chessmen
The House of Staunton is proud to present The Strand Luxury Chess Pieces, a masterful reproduction of the legendary Grand Cigar Divan Chessmen - a design deeply entwined with the history of 19th-century chess culture. Expertly crafted from premium Boxwood and Ebony, this extraordinary set features a commanding 4-3/8" King with a 1-3/4" diameter base, offering a stately and impeccably balanced silhouette befitting the grandeur of its origins.
The Chessmen are beautifully weighted, providing substantial ballast and unwavering stability during practical play. Each piece rests atop luxurious green billiard cloth base pads, while the Kings are further elevated on gold-embossed Black English leather discs - a hallmark of refinement reserved for our highest-quality reproductions. As part of the Frank Camaratta Signature Series, The Strand Chessmen exemplify the historical fidelity, superior craftsmanship, and elegance that have long defined The House of Staunton.
Some History of the Chessmen
The Strand Chessmen - also known as the Grand Cigar Divan Chessmen - were originally designed by John Jaques of London for use at Simpson’s Chess Divan, the famed establishment located along the Strand in London. During the 19th century, this celebrated venue served as the unrivaled gathering place for the world’s greatest players, making it a true Mecca of chess excellence.
Simpson’s hosted a dazzling array of the most influential and accomplished figures of the era, including: Louis-Charles La Bourdonnais, Howard Staunton, Daniel Harrwitz, Wilhelm Steinitz, Joseph Blackburne, Johannes Zukertort, and Emanuel Lasker
Even the legendary American World Champion Paul Morphy was known to have played at the Grand Cigar Divan, lending further prestige to the venue and the Chessmen designed for it.
The Strand pattern stands as a remarkable testament to the artistry and functional elegance of Jaques craftsmanship. Its bold proportions, commanding presence, and distinguished historical lineage make it one of the most captivating and storied designs in the world of antique chess sets.
