The first half, written by Warsaw-based chess historian Tomasz Lissowski, places Winawer’s life and achievements in the context of nineteenth-century chess and the political and social history of Poland, the Austro-Hungarian, German and Russian empires. The second half, by International Master Grigory Bogdanovich, explores Winawer’s creative legacy and his place in chess culture. It is illustrated by many historical photos from the period.
