This Karate Empty Hand Fighting 1950s DVD from Rising Sun brings together all volumes on 1 DVD. It features Hidetaka Nishiyama and Masatoshi Nakayama, plus other JKA greats.
The first 30 minutes is a two-part documentary film called KARATE The ART OF EMPTY HAND FIGHTING, shot in 1955, with outstanding narration and sound effects. It also includes a personal interview recorded in 2001 with Hidetaka Nishiyama in his office in Los Angeles.
In the interview, Nishiyama discusses the evolution of the JKA, the Instructor's training program, his own early training, and Funakoshi Sensei’s role in the development of Shotokan. Bonus footage includes rare scenes of Sensei Nishiyama teaching in Los Angeles and one of the earliest demonstrations of traditional JKA Shotokan Karate in front of a camera by Takayuki Mikami, shot in 1955.
