Mate Threats And Defense – 1000 Tactical Examples is a chess tactics book by FIDE Senior Trainer Grandmaster Jakov Geller. It teaches how to create mate threats, execute them with combination techniques, and defend against them using key defensive methods.
The book contains 1,000 carefully selected examples, including 924 exercises for the reader to solve. It starts with simple one-move illustrations and progresses to more complex tests, with many combinations lasting 5-6 moves and sometimes more. The text gives a detailed explanation of all elements of a mating combination, both individually and when combined with others.
It is split into 28 chapters, with the majority focused on defending against mate threats. Nine defensive techniques each receive their own chapter, and the difficulty increases gradually as new ideas are introduced. This is a direct sequel to 1500 Forced Mates published by the author with Elk and Ruby in 2021 and is intended for a wide audience of chess improvers.
