The Zagreb '59 Series Chess Pieces are a full tournament-sized chess set from The House of Staunton, featuring a 3.875" King with a 1.75" diameter base. Inspired by the popular sets used in major international Chess tournaments during the 1950s and 1960s, this reproduction reflects the distinctive European flair and styling of the original design.
Each chess piece is hand carved by master artisans from the highest grade woods, then heavily weighted and finished with luxurious billiard cloth base pads. The set includes both King finial styles: the ball finial (cross) and the more recognizable Formée cross, both easily removable so you can switch between styles.
Built for practical play, the design uses reinforced Pawn collars, stylized Knights, and minimal Queen crenellations to improve durability while keeping the set elegant and economical. Each new set includes 34 Chessmen, including four Queens, a standard introduced by The House of Staunton in 1993.
