The Zagreb '59 Series Gilded Chess Pieces are a full tournament-sized chess set with a 3.875" King and a 1.75" diameter base. Inspired by one of the most popular sets used in major international chess tournaments during the 1950s and 1960s, this design reflects the style seen in the World Championship Candidates Match held in Bied, Zagreb in 1959.
Each piece is hand carved by master artisans from the highest grade woods and finished with a gilded appearance. The set is heavily weighted, fitted with luxurious billiard cloth base pads, and designed with practical durability in mind. It includes reinforced Pawn collars, stylized Knights, and minimal Queen crenellations. The set comes with both King finial styles, including the ball finial (cross) and the more recognizable Formée cross, both easily removable.
This new set includes 34 Chessmen, including four Queens, a standard introduced by The House of Staunton in 1993. For more chess pieces, browse our Accessories > Chess Pieces category, or compare it with the The 2015 Sinquefield Cup Commemorative Edition Series Chess Pieces - 3.8" King.
